New Liturgical Movement, a widely read Catholic blog, has published an interview with Matthew Schellhorn ahead of his working pilgrimage to Rome.

Matthew discusses his background and current activities, the musical programmes he has devised, the mission of the choral group he founded, and the links between music and faith.

World Premiere of new work by Colin Riley

Matthew Schellhorn will give the World Premiere of a new work by Colin Riley in the York Late Music concert series.

As the Tender Twilight Covers was commissioned by Matthew for his recital and will be performed as part of a programme of new music including works by Ian Wilson, Steve Crowther, Nicola LeFanu, Gráinne Mulvey, Judith Weir CBE, James MacMillan CBE and Messiaen.

Plainchant at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom

Matthew Schellhorn has been invited to lecture on plainchant at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom.

The talk, entitled "A History of Music: Gregorian Chant", is part of The Quarterdeck Series, a programme of extra-curricular evening talks that explore ideas and meaning through the arts and culture. Now in its second year, the series is designed to offer an encounter with interesting subjects presented by guest speakers. The talks often have a philosophical theme and the aim is to provoke thinking and expand knowledge horizons. At the same time the programme strives to energise the faculties of reason and logic, improve discernment and better equip participants to challenge some of the assumptions that the contemporary world liberally dispenses.

The Defence Academy of the United Kingdom provides higher education for personnel in the British Armed Forces, Civil Service, other government departments and service personnel from other nations. The Director General of the Defence Academy is Duncan Potts, a senior Royal Navy officer.

"A History of Music: Gregorian Chant" will take place on Tuesday 6th October 2015.

Concert in aid of Cancer Research UK

Matthew Schellhorn is performing in aid of Cancer Research UK this Saturday.

He will performing works by Daquin, Rameau, Scarlatti and Bach as part of an early music recital at St John's Church, Sidcup, on Saturday 20th June 2015 at 19:30. Admission is £5.

Matthew Schellhorn appointed to new role for Latin Mass Society

Matthew Schellhorn has been appointed to a new role in London created by the Latin Mass Society.

As Director of Music for London Matthew will oversee the Society’s sponsorship of Sacred Music in the capital, also providing professional support for annual events such as the high-profile Holy Week services in St Mary Moorfields in the City of London and the busy schedule of pilgrimages and special events. He will also work with the Gregorian Chant Network in coordinating a programme of training events and conferences.

Dr Joseph Shaw, Chairman of the Latin Mass Society, said: "The promotion of Sacred Music is one of the core objectives of the Latin Mass Society, which has a long history of maintaining the connection between the Church’s patrimony of music and the liturgy for which it was created. The Greater London area, in particular, with its flagship celebrations including the Sacred Triduum has had a greater need for professional music demanding an intense amount of musical planning and execution at the highest standard. We are therefore delighted to appoint a musician of Matthew Schellhorn’s calibre to take our work in the capital, where many of our Masses are celebrated, to a new and higher level."

Matthew Schellhorn said: "I am delighted to be offered this opportunity to work with the Latin Mass Society in promoting Sacred Music. The appointment of a Director of Music for London gives the Latin Mass Society an opportunity to underline its commitment to chant and polyphony and is further a fitting way to mark its 50th Anniversary as it re-commits itself to maintaining and promoting the highest standards of liturgical celebrations."

Sir James MacMillan, Patron of the Latin Mass Society, said: "I am delighted to hear of Matthew Schellhorn's appointment as the Latin Mass Society's Director of Music for London. Matthew is a consummate musician in both the secular and sacred spheres and I have known and admired his work for many years. He will provide the perfect guidance and leadership for the Society and will inspire its efforts throughout the country too. The LMS has never been more needed, and Matthew Schellhorn's new position will help the Church and its music go from strength to strength."

Forthcoming song recitals in Westminster and Cambridge

Matthew Schellhorn once more partners award-winning soprano Susanna Fairbairn in two concerts next week.

The first, in St Margaret's Westminster is on Monday 27th April 2015 at 13:00 (admission free). The second is in the Cambridge International Concert Series on Sunday 3rd May 2015 at 20:00 (tickets £10/£4 – student tickets available here.

Following their 2015 Park Lane Group performances at the Southbank Centre, the pair again present repertoire by Joseph Horovitz and Robert Saxton with Poulenc's charming La courte paille and Messiaen's monumental Poèmes pour Mi, written in 1936 for the composer's first wife whose life was tragically ended by terminal illness.

Schellhorn Prize winning entry receives its World Premiere

The winning entry of the 2015 inaugural Schellhorn Prize for Sacred Music Composition received its World Premiere during the recent Triduum services in the City of London.

Ecce Quam Bonum, a setting of Psalm 133 by young composer Marco Galvani, was performed as part of the Easter Vigil Mass at St Mary Moorfields.

As the winner of the Prize, Marco received £500 in addition to the performance.

Classical pianist Matthew Schellhorn founded the prize in 2014 to foster artistic endeavour and encourage excellence in the Sacred Liturgy. The prize is open to composers aged 26 or under, regardless of nationality, who are studying, or have studied at any conservatoire or university in England or Wales.

Marco, 20, from Prenton on the Wirral, said: ‘It was an honour to hear my piece performed. It was a beautifully moving service.’

Matthew Schellhorn, who conducted the performance at St Mary Moorfields said: ‘It was a pleasure to perform Marco’s piece on Holy Saturday. I found it very effective indeed and all the singers really enjoyed getting to grips with it in rehearsal. Many people said afterwards how much they enjoyed the piece and – importantly – how much it complemented such ancient ceremonies. I shall follow Marco’s career closely.’

The Schellhorn Prize is supported by Latin Mass Society, which supported the performance. Chairman Joseph Shaw said: ‘We congratulate Marco Galvani for so successfully putting modern musical techniques and style to work for the Church, for the liturgical tradition, and for the glory of God. He has demonstrated that the Church’s musical patrimony is not all in the past: that today’s composers can continue to add to it.’

Forthcoming performance of Ian Wilson's Stations

Matthew Schellhorn will perform Ian Wilson's groundbreaking solo piano work, Stations, at Chelmsford Cathedral during Holy Week.

Following the successful release of Matthew Schellhorn's disc of the work on Diatribe Records in 2014, this concert will the only opportunity in 2015 to hear Stations performed complete live.

Winner of the Schellhorn Prize for Sacred Music Composition announced

The winner of the 2015 inaugural Schellhorn Prize for Sacred Music Composition has been announced.

Young composer Marco Galvani wins a £500 prize and a world premiere during the Holy Week services at St Mary Moorfields Catholic Church in the City of London.

Marco, 20, from Prenton on the Wirral, is a second-year Music student at The Queen’s College, Oxford. His piece
Ecce Quam Bonum, a short setting of the first verses of Psalm 133, will be performed on Holy Saturday.

Marco said: ‘Winning this prize means an awful lot to me. I put a lot into the piece, I pushed myself more than I had before and tried out more complex ideas.

‘I have been singing choral music for as long as I can remember, and it’s an amazing feeling to win a prize for a choral piece that I have composed myself. I’m very excited about having my piece performed in London.’

Classical pianist Matthew Schellhorn founded the prize in 2014 to foster artistic endeavor and encourage excellence in the Sacred Liturgy. Matthew said: ‘The competition is aimed at 18 to 26 year olds, which is the age when musicians need financial help and encouragement and some kind of infrastructure. It is hoped the prize will provide an incentive and build up a working relationship.’

‘I was delighted to work with four leading practicing musicians in order to recommend a winner. Judging was a tough call because many of the entries displayed a high degree of compositional merit and sensitivity. Marco’s piece was outstanding, and further it is performable by a small group making it adaptable in the real world.

In addition, the Trustees have given an honourable mention to the following: Robert Busiakiewitz for
Kyrie, Barnaby Martin for Gloria, Thomas Neal for Pange lingua.

Matthew added: ‘Encouraging people to write liturgical music helps to raise the standard of contemporary music in Catholic churches. Currently lots of brilliant liturgical music is commissioned but is performed in concert and not in the Sacred Liturgy. This prize helps re-establish the link between liturgical music and the Church.’

The Schellhorn Prize for Sacred Music Composition is supported by the Latin Mass Society of England and Wales. Chairman Joseph Shaw said: ‘I am delighted that the Latin Mass Society has taken part in this important initiative of the Schellhorn Trust to encourage young composers to tackle liturgical music. I congratulate Marco for his winning piece, which will be a worthy part of our Holy Week services in St Mary Moorfields, London, this year.’
