Performance with Ulster Orchestra in Belfast Festival

On Tuesday 30 October 2012, Matthew Schellhorn will perform with the Ulster Orchestra.

The concert, part of the Ulster Bank Belfast Festival at Queens, will feature the World Premiere of Ian Wilson’s new piano concert Flags and Emblems, commissioned by the Ulster Orchestra with funding from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Lottery Unit.

Taking two very different types of musical material and exploring how having them in close proximity can alter their fundamental characteristics, this new work by Ian Wilson is exciting, contemplative and uplifting. Pianist Matthew Schellhorn, a long-time collaborator of Wilson’s, and the Ballygowan Flute Band combine to create this unique performance.

The programme will also include Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite and Lutoslawski’s Musique Funèbre.

The concert begins at 20:00, with a pre-concert talk at 19:30.

Highlights from Matthew Schellhorn’s recent recital at the Walled City Fesitval are now online.

Exploring a huge range of idioms, this recital of Irish contemporary piano music gave a survey of Irish music from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and included two world premieres of newly commissioned works by Gráinne Mulvey and Nicola LeFanu (daughter of Dame Elizabeth Maconchy).

The programme included several pieces commissioned for the (AXA) Dublin International Piano Competition, and also made a special feature of the music of Ian Wilson, with whom Schellhorn has developed a close working relationship over the last decade.

Forthcoming recital in Walled City Music Festival, Derry

On Wednesday 2 August 2012, Matthew Schellhorn will give a solo recital in the Walled City Music Festival, Derry, Northern Ireland.

Forthcoming song recital in Cambridge

On Tuesday 15 May 2012, Matthew Schellhorn will collaborate with American lyric coloratura soprano, Michelle Latour, in a song recital in Cambridge. The evening will feature the beautiful Hölderlin Lieder by Silesian-born Austrian composer, Viktor Ullmann (1898–1944), as well as new works by Americans Lori Latiman and Ned Rorem. The programme also includes the UK Premiere of pieces from the evocative set, Vteřiny (‘Seconds’), by Czech composer Vitĕzslava Kaprálová (1815–1840).

Forthcoming recital in Bath

On Wednesday 29 February 2012, Matthew Schellhorn will give a solo recital in Bath at the Michael Tippett Centre.

The programme, entitled “In Memoriam Olivier Messiaen”, includes works by Messiaen’s teacher, Maurice Emmanuel, Tristan Murail and Jonathan Harvey, and also features the UK premiere of The shadow of the blackbird by David Bruce.

World Premiere of First Piano Sonata by Wojciech Kosma

Matthew Schellhorn will give the World Premiere of Wojciech Kosma's First Piano Sonata, tonight at Deptford Town Hall.

Kosma composed his First Piano Sonata by following a random system of selection from a complete catalogue of piano's chords and their rhythmic and dynamic properties. The work is notated using an unorthodox continuous form (using no bars), irrespective of the technical difficulties it might create in reading or performing the score. As the result the music is challenging, complex and unpredictable. The piece is a part of a larger compositional project, which will present further instances of Kosma's method.

The concert is supported by Polish Cultural Institute in London.

Matthew Schellhorn records Stations

Matthew Schellhorn returned to the studio this week to record Ian Wilson’s Stations.

Stations is a fourteen-movement work for solo piano inspired by the Catholic devotion of the Stations of the Cross – a narrative in fourteen scenes that relates to the events leading from Christ’s death sentence to his entombment. It was written for Matthew Schellhorn between 2006–07.

The work is divided into four Books and each Book is also performable as a separate entity. Matthew Schellhorn gave the world premiere of each Book separately between 2007 and 2008 and also gave the first complete performances of the work in 2009.

Recordings took place in the Curtis Auditorium, Cork School of Music, between Wednesday 1 June and Friday 3 June 2011, and the disc is due to be released later this year.

Win at British Composer Awards 2010

One of the pieces commissioned and premiered by Matthew Schellhorn has led to a win for its composer at the BASCA British Composer Awards 2010.

Cheryl Frances-Hoad (b. 1980) won the award for best piece in the Instrumental Solo or Duo category. Her piece, 'Stolen Rhythm' was written last year as part of a project to commemorate the Haydn bicentenary. The six pieces, grouped together as Homage to Haydn, received their world premiere performances in the 2009 Cambridge Festival and were published later that year in Muso magazine.

This year’s event proved exceptional on account of the unprecedented number of female composers who received accolades, as well as the outstanding number of young composers who have been awarded. Cheryl impressed the judges on two counts this year, also winning in the Liturgical category for 'Psalm 1: Blessed is the Man.'

The British Composer Awards are presented by BASCA and sponsored by PRS for Music. In association with BBC Radio 3 the event will be broadcast in `Performance on 3’ at 7pm on Wednesday 1 December 2010.

World Premieres in Britain and France

During December, Matthew Schellhorn will join in performances of 12 world premieres as part of the International Composer Pyramid project 2010 in Canterbury and France.



The concerts are in association with SOUNDS NEW Contemporary Music Festival, UK, and Coups de Vents, France, and is being funded by INTERREG IVA 2 Mers Seas Zeeën – European Union.

The first concert will be at 4pm on Saturday 4th December 2010 at Augustine Hall, Canterbury. The second will be at 3pm on Sunday 5th December 2010at the Conservatoire de Musique et d’Art Dramatique de Dunkerque (Centre Maurice Ravel Rue du Nouvel Arsenal / 59140 Dunkerque). The conductor will be Gerry Cornelius.

Composers from France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom were invited to submit works for selection to participate in a unique, new competition. The winning composers are: Stephen Mark Barchan (UK), Phil Dawson (England), Clara Iannotta (Italy) , Ryan Latimer (UK), Mateu Malondra Flaquer (Spain), Elo Masing (Estonia), Florent Motsch (France), Benjamin Oliver (UK), Hugo Ribeiro (Portugal), Daniel Saleeb (UK), Mike Solomon (French-America), Nicolas Tzortzis (Greece).

In 2011, this competition extends its boundary to Europe, where composers can apply to take part in a rigorous advanced composition course. In 2012, the year
of the Olympics, an International Composers Competition will be held in Canterbury.

Haydn commission shortlisted for British Composer Awards 2010

One of the pieces from Homage to Haydn, commissioned by Matthew Schellhorn and premiered in the 2009 Cambridge Festival, has been shortlisted for a British Composer Award.

‘Stolen Rhythm’ by Cheryl Frances-Hoad (b. 1980), was written last year as part of a project to commemorate the Haydn bicentenary. Six composers were commissioned to write a piece based on the letters H-A-Y-D-N, taking as their inspiration a similar set of pieces by Debussy, Ravel, Dukas, d’Indy, Hahn, and Widor. ‘Stolen Rhythm’ was the fourth piece in the set. The other composers involved in the project were Tim Watts, Colin Riley, Cecilia McDowall, Michael Zev Gordon, and Jeremy Thurlow. The six pieces, grouped together as Homage to Haydn, received their world premiere performances in the 2009 Cambridge Festival and were published later that year in Muso magazine.

Cheryl Frances-Hoad writes: ‘I took inspiration from the third movement of Haydn’s piano sonata in E flat (Hob XVI: 45) – the way it continually moves forward with a boundless energy and wit is thrilling. It seemed to me that it was the rhythmic content of the movement that gave it these properties, so I decided shamelessly to steal the rhythm – hook, line and sinker – and simply put my notes to it. I have played with various transmutations of the notes B, A, D, D, G, generating lots of different sets of pitches by methods such as inversion and transposition in order to arrive at the harmonic and melodic content.’

‘I am delighted that Cheryl’s piece is gaining the recognition it deserves,’ says Matthew Schellhorn. ‘“Stolen Rhythm” is a fabulously crafted and witty piece, which is great fun to perform, and which makes a very fitting tribute to Haydn.’

Recent chamber collaborations

Matthew recently collaborated with new music specialists Ossian Ensemble in two festival appearances.



At the Sounds New Festival in Canterbury the Ossians played works by Jonathan Harvey, Bent Sørensen, Anne Boyd, Messiaen, and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. The concert also included the world premieres of Eden by Darren Bloom, and of Isochronous by Patrick Nunn, which Matthew performed with percussionist Sarah Cresswell.

The group also performed in a sell-out event in the newly established Kew Music Festival, performing the 20th-century masterpiece Eight Songs for a Mad King by the ensemble's Honorary Patron, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. The baritone was Kelvin Thomas. The event included a drinks reception, a private access-all-areas tour of the Palace and a talk by historian David Blomfield MBE. Festival Director Spencer Down wrote: 'A fantastic performance ... We feel very privileged to have you perform at our first festival.’

Cambridge Music Festival 2009

Newly commissioned set of piano miniatures Homage to Haydn received its world premiere recently in the 2009 Cambridge Music Festival.



On Thursday 12 November, six pieces by different composers were performed to an enthusiastic audience in Robinson College Chapel.

Homage to Haydn is a set of six miniatures commissioned by pianist Matthew Schellhorn for the 2009 Cambridge Festival. The idea came from the project undertaken a hundred years ago for the Haydn Centenary by Debussy, Ravel, Dukas, d’Indy, Hahn and Widor, each of whom wrote a miniature, later published in La Revue Musicale, for the Société Internationale de Musique. These pieces were based on the letters H-A-Y-D-N translated into the musical notes B-A-D-D-G (where B = H in German, and with D and G supplying for otherwise unplayable letters): this technique, known as soggetto cavato (literally, ‘carved subject’), was commonly used in the Renaissance.

A hundred years later, six British composers – Cheryl Frances-Hoad, Michael Zev Gordon, Cecilia McDowall, Colin Riley, Jeremy Thurlow, and Tim Watts – have written pieces to celebrate Haydn’s bicentenary. At Matthew Schellhorn’s request, the choice of letters was freed up, with the two ‘spare’ letters becoming at the discretion of each composer.

World Premiere of Stations by Ian Wilson

During a recital at the 2007 London Festival of Contemporary Church Music on Friday 18 May 2007, Matthew Schellhorn gave the world premiere of a new work written for him by Irish composer Ian Wilson.

Stations is a fourteen-movement work for solo piano (as of May 2007, half-complete), inspired by the Catholic devotion of the Stations of the Cross – a narrative in fourteen scenes that relates to the events leading from Christ's death sentence to his entombment.

Ian Wilson writes: "The work came from an embryonic idea that I had been considering for some time but which came into sharp focus once pianist Matthew Schellhorn expressed interest in having a new work from me.

"In the past, I have sought on occasion to marry aspects of the Christian faith with universal human experience. Works such as The Seven Last Words (for piano trio), Winter's Edge (for string quartet), and Rich Harbour (a concerto for organ and orchestra) have all sought to distil the emotional content of the ideas behind them and to transpose them onto dramatic musical frameworks that carry the works forward unhindered by dogma or imagery.

"In Stations, I use the devotional sequence of the Stations of the Cross as the structural and emotional basis for a large-scale instrumental work. As well as being obviously related to that idea, I also want to expand the potential 'meaning' of the work so that intimations of programme music or purely impressionistic or pictorial responses will not arise, but rather a strong, unified journey-type piece will result. The intention is to have a multi-movement, seventy-five-minute work that creates its own sense of musical drama as it proceeds."

Stations is divided into four Books. While complete performances of the whole work are the aspiration, each Book is also performable as a separate entity. The cycle will continue in recitals in autumn 2007, and will be completed at the Wigmore Hall in 2008.

World Premiere of Limena by Ian Wilson

Limena was originally written in 1998 for pianist Hugh Tinney and the Irish Chamber Orchestra. It was revised in 2006 for performance with piano and string quartet.



The programme also included Haydn's String Quartet in D, op. 50, no. 6 ('Frog'), Ian Wilson's Verschwindend for piano solo, and Schumann's Piano Quintet in E flat, op. 44.

There was also a pre-concert talk during which Ian Wilson chatted with Matthew Schellhorn about his music.
